Video Project

Untitled from Katie D'Auria on Vimeo.

Some thoughts on watching the video I had was that even though I am immersed in watching tv I kind of still keep it real with my cats nearby. Every time I am watching TV or am on the computer my cats come and keep me company and walk all over me trying to get my attention to them instead of the technology I use. It works more when I am watching TV cause when I'm on my computer I can not really be bothered with my cats.

And yet it still fills weird that the video represents my life. The thing is that I hardly find myself sitting and reading or drawing. Now I just sit and watch tv and am on my computer. I would like to think that technology has not taken over my life to much but before I knew it, I couldn't be bothered with any thing else.

Though I admire the Wii because even though it is a video game you get to interact so that you are not just sitting on your but and are like a zombie watching the screen. The Wii you are active and your moving around. If I had a son I would let them play with a Wii instead of the x box or psp. I would also try to get more of his life outside doing other things then watching tv and being on the computer and I think in order to do this, the parents have some of the responsibility to also be out and about so your not being a hypocrite.

  2. Kate,
It took me about a minute to even realize where you were in your video, something that some may see as an error on your part but I really think it helps to show how the viewer becomes inconsequential and the TV engrosses you.
You really come off as being in a state of disbelief, amazed that this "zombie" is in fact you and that this is the way you are now, instead of how you used to read or draw. Even though, with this state of attentiveness, you are still connected to the real world by your cat, which I think is good, everybody needs a little something to keep them connected to the real world when immersed so fully in the digital.
Your ideas on the Wii are mostly the mainstream idea and the image that they try to project with the marketing executives. As a parent you say you would not want your son to X-Box or PSP, but the reality of the situation is that even a Wii would leave your son pretty vegetative.
In order to explore your idea, I feel that it would be nice to have a video of somebody playing an X-Box and another video of the same person playing Wii, to see how they react differently. I agree that parents have to take responsibility, but at a certain point it has to have some give and take and the child should realize the error of their ways, which leads to the classic "There are no bad students, only bad teachers" which can be taken as the kids are not learning here but it is the parents fault, or the teacher if you will, which is what you are proposing. The only solution for this would be a way of cutting down the gameplay or to play Wii, which by the way, only has a couple of games that require more than an arm flick to trigger the controls.
Watching you watch TV makes me think about how my eyes were drawn straight to the TV and I knew what you were watching even without having ever watched it (Greys Anatomy if I am correct). I think that this shows that we focus so much on the digital world even if irrelevant to us, and that for me specifically, that I can connect with this vegetative state, which is, let's be honest, not good.
I liked you post and enjoyed stumbling onto it. Even without proposing points, your post still makes me think about so much and for that, I thank you.
    Thanks for the insights,
    Henry

  3. Hey Kate,

It was interesting to see you watching tv with your cat, it was so normal and real. You seem very focused on the TV but not completely because you had your cat there. I agree that usually when we are on the computer we do not want to be disturbed or interrupted. I think its probably easier for pets to snuggle up or interrupt their owners when its something like tv, because more than one person can watch it at a time, while on the computer its just you. I wonder what pets think when they see their owner watching tv or playing computer. Its interesting that people pet their pets absentmindedly when they're doing something like watching tv.

When you were talking about the wii since I was thinking about my mom when she uses wii fit and I think its kind of funny watching her play it, because when she is running or jogging she's pumping her arms wildly and yells at the wii characters that are ahead of her. So, I agree, its pretty active in comparison to video games that only use controllers.

I liked the video cause it showed how people really interacted with a digital device in their daily lives.

  4. lol. I like how you think my cats are watching tv, sometimes I like to think that but I figure its just because they want to get warm so they snuggle up to me. It would be interesting to see and hear what our pets are thinking of. They probably dont understand what were doing and why we are on it all the time. But there so cute so I guess it makes up for bothering me.

OMG, my mom does that too. She's so funny to watch. She is always everywhere and flinging her arms, I always have to doge her. But the funny thing is, is that she always loses, even with flinging her arms she always loses and she even does the motion like the wii characters.
